Melbourne International Film Festival
The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is an iconic Melbourne event with a devoted audience. MIFF hosts a feast of cinematic delicacies from over 50 countries for some 17 days each winter, heavily garnished with a range of parties and special events that envelop the CBD. In addition to screening the very best in world cinema, MIFF is Australia's largest showcase of new Australian cinema and most vocal champion of both emerging and established local filmmaking talent.
MIFF has a rich history, celebrating 59 years in 2010 which makes it one of the oldest film festival's in the world (one year younger than Cannes!). From its earliest days, MIFF has provided audiences with a unique window on the world and has acted as the leading intellectual and artistic catalyst in Australia's screen cultural landscape.
The Festival enjoys annual admissions of 185,000, making it one of Melbourne's significant public events.
Polish Festival @ Federation Square
The aim of the Polish Festival is to bring not only Polish dance but also the unique beauty, flavours and melodies of Poland to Melbourne, transforming the most prominent landmark in our CBD into a showcase of a vibrant, 1000-year-old culture in which hospitality and festivity play an integral role.
The Festival has something to delight every person and every sense. The square's main stage is a hub of music, colour and animation throughout the day as traditional Polish dances are performed by both adults and children. Down along the Yarra's River Walk, the nose and tastebuds are brought into play as various stalls serve up the classics of Polish cuisine, including mouth-watering Kielbasa (sausages), pierogi (dumplings filled with combinations of pork, beef, mushrooms, cabbage and secret herbs that only Polish grandmothers can pronounce), bigos (hunter's stew that tradition says tastes better after three days, but never actually lasts past the day of creation!) and pączki (doughnuts with a variety of fruit, creme or even rose-petal jam fillings).
There's plenty to keep the kids occupied too, including face-painting and mask-making, at the free all-day Kids Stop. And for the parents, a shaded beer garden provides the perfect space to relax and enjoy the flavours of Poland's world-famous vodka and beer. The Festival also has plenty to satisfy the shopping bug, with an abundance of merchandise on offer including books, clothes, fashion accessories, Christmas decorations and travel packages, much of it unique to the Festival. Perhaps most enticing is the range of elegant amber jewellery, crafted in Poland and renowned worldwide for its beautiful honey colour and calming properties. All this comes together to create a memorable day that allows you to experience the lively, Old World centre of Europe just by taking a short trip from home.
Beer and Brewer Expo
A celebration of all things beer is set for Melbourne when the Beer and Brewer Expo returns bigger and better in May. The annual event will be held at Federation Square this May, with the continued support of major sponsor, Dan Murphy's.
Coinciding with the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) - the second-largest of their kind in the world - the expo will again unite the global brewing community with beer-lovers keen to learn more about the art of beer production and meet the people behind it.
With a strong emphasis on education, the expo will tap into the growing demand for better beer knowledge while introducing many unique brews now available. Presentations from international experts will also be held on topics including home brewing, beer and food matching, tasting master classes and more.
Expo visitors will get to sample unique brews from around the world and the brewers will be manning the stands to tackle the big questions face-to-face. Visitors will be left with a solid understanding of the increasing diversity and complexity of beers, particularly those now being produced in Australia.
A strong focus on RSA will be retained throughout the expo, with 50ml, 100ml and 200ml beer samples offered, along with food and public transport options for the CBD location.
Entry tickets are now on sale and will also be available at the door, but everyone who takes advantage of the 15 per cent Early Bird Discount tickets through Ticketek before May 6 will go into the draw to win a grand prize. Other exciting giveaways will also be up for grabs throughout the expo.
